A mechanical keyboard is a significant investment for any gamer, programmer, or writer. Over months of heavy typing, dust, crumbs, hair, and sticky spills inevitably find their way between the keycaps. Knowing how to clean mechanical keyboard parts properly keeps your device functioning smoothly and extends its lifespan. Regular maintenance not only improves your typing hygiene but also restores that crisp, tactile feel you fell in love with.
Gather Your Cleaning Supplies
Before you begin taking apart your favorite peripheral, gather the right tools to avoid damaging the delicate switches and plastic components. Using incorrect tools can scratch the keycaps or snap the stems.
- Keycap puller (wire pullers are safest for preventing scratches)
- Compressed air can or an electric air duster
- Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher)
- Cotton swabs and microfiber cloths
- A small bowl of warm water with a mild dish soap
- Switch puller (only if you have a hot-swappable keyboard and want a deep clean)
Step 1: Unplug and Document Your Layout
Safety comes first when dealing with electronics. Always disconnect your keyboard from the computer or turn off its wireless connection before starting. If your keyboard features a non-standard layout or unique keycap profiles like XDA or SA, snap a quick photo with your smartphone. This reference picture prevents guessing games when it is time to put every keycap back in its exact spot.
Step 2: Remove the Keycaps Safely
Take your wire keycap puller and gently slip the loops around opposite corners of a keycap. Press down slightly so the wires slide under the edges, then pull straight up with steady vertical force. Avoid pulling at an angle, as this can snap the cross-shaped stems underneath. For larger keys equipped with metal stabilizer bars—such as the spacebar, enter, and shift keys—lift them very carefully so you do not misplace the tiny stabilizing inserts.
Step 3: Wash the Keycaps
Drop all the removed plastic keycaps into a bowl filled with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Let them soak for about fifteen to thirty minutes to loosen stubborn oils and grime. Gently agitate the water with your hands to scrub away residue. Afterward, rinse them thoroughly under clean tap water. Spread the keycaps out on a thick towel and allow them to air-dry completely for at least 24 hours. Putting damp keycaps back onto your keyboard can trap moisture and ruin the internal circuit board.
Step 4: Clear Out Debris from the Chassis
While the keycaps are drying, turn your attention to the keyboard base. Hold the keyboard upside down and gently tap the back to dislodge loose debris. Use your compressed air can or electric duster in short, controlled bursts to blow out stubborn dust hiding between the mechanical switches. Tilt the board at various angles to ensure all loose particles escape the housing.
Step 5: Clean the Switch Plates and Housing
Dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol—ensure it is slightly moist, not dripping wet. Carefully wipe around the exposed switch housings and the metal plate. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates quickly, making it ideal for electronics cleaning. If you encounter sticky residue from spilled soda or coffee, scrub gently until the residue dissolves completely. Never pour liquids directly onto the keyboard surface.
Step 6: Reassembly and Testing
Once every single keycap is completely dry and the chassis is spotless, refer to your reference photo and press the keycaps back onto their respective stems. Push down firmly until you feel a secure click. Plug your keyboard back into your computer and open a blank document to test every single switch. Regular upkeep every few months will keep your typing setup performing at its absolute best.
